Origins and Mission
The Institute of Land Management, Cadastre, and Melioration was established in response to the critical need for rational land use and the growing demand for specialists during Russia’s period of socio-economic transformation. As land became a market asset and tax object, the Republic of Buryatia required experts to manage land redistribution, cadastral registration, and melioration. The institute was founded to address the regional shortage of qualified professionals in these fields.

Formation and Early Development
In 1996, the Department of Land Management was created under the Agronomy Faculty of the Buryat State Agricultural Academy, with the support of regional land management authorities. Vladimir S. Bazhenov, an experienced specialist and educator, played a key role in its formation. By engaging practitioners and scientists, the department quickly expanded its educational programs to include land and urban cadastre, as well as land reclamation.

Growth into an Independent Institute
Rapid growth and the expanding scope of land reform led to the establishment of the Institute of Land Management, Cadastre, and Melioration in 2005. Under Bazhenov’s leadership, the institute introduced modern teaching tools, including GIS technologies and remote sensing, while strengthening ties with industry organizations. These partnerships provided students with practical training and employment opportunities in key regional institutions.

Educational Evolution and Leadership
Transitioning to a two-tier education system, the institute began offering bachelor’s programs in "Land Management and Cadastres," "Geodesy and Remote Sensing," and "Environmental Engineering." It was later headed by T.M. Komendanova and currently by N.D. Baldanov, both of whom continued to emphasize innovation and collaboration with industry. The institute maintained its reputation through a focus on applied learning and research.

Achievements and Recognition
Over the years, the institute has supplied highly qualified specialists to regional and federal land management bodies, cadastral services, and environmental organizations. Its graduates hold influential positions in public administration and private enterprises. Recognized as the leading faculty within the academy in recent ratings, the institute continues to play a vital role in training experts for the sustainable management of land and water resources.

The Institute ensures high-quality education through a combination of theoretical knowledge and practical training, consistently acknowledged by employers through official letters of appreciation. These commendations highlight graduates' strong theoretical preparation, professional conduct, responsibility, and creative approach to work. In 2020, the bachelor's and master's programs in "Land Management and Cadastres" successfully underwent professional-public accreditation. The Institute actively participates in the Federal Internet Exam for Professional Education (FEPO), serving as a regional testing platform since 2020. In 2023, fourth-year bachelor's students earned 7 gold and 2 silver certificates in this national assessment.

Student Research Development
Student research continues to gain momentum through various initiatives. The department organizes research circles engaging both bachelor's and master's students, with performance evaluated through conference presentations, seminar participation, and academic competitions. The annual program includes research conferences following industrial practice (with employer representatives) and scientific conferences dedicated to Russian Science Day. Students regularly achieve distinction at university, municipal, republican, and all-Russian levels, with numerous publications indexed in the Russian Science Citation Index. Notable accomplishments include recipients of the Russian Presidential Scholarship (e.g., I. Pimenova, 2021) and annual Rosselkhozbank Scholarship laureates since 2020.

Patriotic Education
Patriotic education forms a crucial component of student development within humanities departments, fostering social responsibility, civic engagement, and spiritual growth as part of comprehensive personality development.

Creativity, Sports, and Volunteerism
Beyond their academic and research pursuits, our students actively distinguish themselves in the arts, athletics, and community service. Throughout the institute's history, our students and graduates have been lead performers in renowned folk ensembles such as "Altan-Bulag," "Razdolie," and "Amvitey," representing both the Academy and the Republic of Buryatia at regional, national, and international festivals and competitions. Students also excel in the popular comedy show KVN and consistently win prizes at the annual "Student Spring" creativity festival, not only at the university level but also in regional and national stages.

In athletics, many of our students are ranked candidates for master of sport and masters of sport in disciplines like freestyle wrestling and archery, regularly achieving top placements in competitions at all levels. Among our most distinguished alumni are Valentina Zayakhanova, who secured 1st place in team events at the European Youth Championship in international draughts (Poland, 2001) and 2nd place at the Russian Youth Championship (Tver, 2006); Aldar Balzhinimaev, a champion of Russian competitions and the 2010 Youth Olympic Games in Singapore.

A profound commitment to social causes is also a hallmark of our student body. Many engage in volunteer work, contributing to various community initiatives, including providing active support to participants of the Special Military Operation and their families.
